The Porsche-Diesel Standard 218 , also N 218 , is the third generation of the two-cylinder standard tractor series from Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau GmbH in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. The Standard 218 was available in four different versions. It replaced the previous Standard 208 from 1957 . Between 1957 and 1963, a total of more than 12,000 tugs were built.

The Porsche 218 tractors are made of a frameless block design, with a portal axle at the rear and a swing axle at the front; the wheelbase is 1668 mm. The front track can be adjusted by pulling out the front axle. A three-point linkage was available on request, which can lift weights of up to 550 kg. The inner shoe brake acts on the rear wheels and can also act as a steering brake. So the Porsche 218 can be turned on the spot. The steering and the transmission were supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen . All tractors have six forward gears, one crawler gear and one reverse gear. The clutch is the single-disc dry clutch K 200 Z from Fichtel & Sachs , which works together with an oil-hydraulic Voith clutch. The standard V 218, which only has a five-speed gearbox, is an exception. The V 218 also lacks the oil-hydraulic clutch. The Porsche 218 with side cutter was available for an extra charge of 500 DM. The permissible total weight is 2,300 kg. The tractors were painted in RAL 3002 ( carmine red ), but the wheels in RAL 1014 or 1015 (ivory). The Standard 218 does not have a fuel tap between the tank and the injection pump because it would leak too quickly.

Executions

There are four different variants of the Porsche 218:

  • H 218 (1957-1960):
The basic model with six-speed gearbox, oil-hydraulic Voith fluid coupling and decorative strips.
  • V 218 (1958–1961):
The "simplified" version with five-speed gearbox and mechanical clutch, without decorative strips.
  • S 218 (1958-1963):
The "narrow gauge" version, like the H 218, but deviating from it, gauges 840/1240 mm and wheelbase 1620 mm.
  • U 218 (1958–1961):
Execution like H 218, additionally with switchable gearbox and road PTO, often with front fenders and convertible top.

The two-cylinder in-line four-stroke diesel engine of the Porsche 218 with the designation F 218 , in contrast to its predecessor No. 2066 used in the Porsche 208, does not have a gray cast iron but an aluminum housing. The bore and stroke of the motor are 95 × 116 mm; the displacement is 1644 cm³. It has air cooling with radial fans. The engine housing is in two parts, other elements such as the crankshaft with screwed-on counterweights, diagonally split connecting rods, the Bosch in-line injection pump and the aluminum bumpers were retained from the 2066 engine. The crankshaft has three bearings. The lubrication works with pressure circulation , the air is cleaned by an oil bath air filter. The hanging valves are operated via a gear-driven camshaft below. In order to form an ignitable mixture with the air, the fuel in the Porsche F 218 is injected into vortex chambers. Each piston has five piston rings. During the production period there was also a version with only four piston rings. The flywheel has a diameter of 40 cm. The engine develops at 2000 min -1 , a power of 25 HP (18 kW) and a torque of 8.95 kpm (88 Nm). The maximum torque output is 9.3 kpm (91 Nm) at 1800 min -1 . The minimum compression of the engine is 18 atü (18.63 bar), the compression ratio 19: 1. The fuel injection pressure of the injection pump is 149 atü (147 bar). The cetane number of the diesel fuel should not fall below 44 cetane.

maintenance

Different sizes are mentioned for the maintenance of the tractor. The optimal compression of the engine is given as 24 to 28 bar, at less than 18.2 bar the engine should no longer be operated. The engine oil pressure should be at least 0.8 kg / cm² and a maximum of 5.0 kg / cm². The oil pressure of the three-point linkage should amount to 74 kg / cm². The engine oil should only be changed when it is warm. The oil change interval is 50 hours up to the 100th operating hour. After that, the oil should be changed every 20 to 50 hours. Only high-performance engine oil with the viscosity grade SAE 20 or SAE 30 should be used; at temperatures below −9.4 ° C, SAE 10 oil should be used. The amount of oil is 5⅔ liters. Oil bath filters and oil ventilation filters must be cleaned regularly, as well as the oil strainer and the main flow filter. The paper cartridge of the auxiliary flow filter must be replaced with every oil change, if present. The oil bath air filter should be filled up to the maximum mark regularly; the oil should be changed once a month, more frequently in dusty regions. High-performance engine oil is used as the oil. It is recommended to change the gear oil after 50 hours of operation and then once a year. A total of 18 liters of SAE 90 gear oil must be changed. For the reduction gear, 1.9 liters of SAE 90 gear oil are changed each time, for the first time after 500 operating hours, then once a year. The amount of oil in the power lift is 4 liters of SAE 10 engine oil. The oil should be changed for the first time after 50 hours of operation, then also once a year.
