Previous model Porsche Cayman (type 987c)
successor Porsche 718 Cayman (type 982)

The Porsche Cayman Type 981c is the second generation of the Porsche Cayman and shares the technical platform with the Porsche Boxster (Type 981). It was unveiled at the LA Auto Show on November 29, 2012 . It is lighter than its predecessor and has 10 HP (Cayman) or 5 HP (Cayman S) more power than its predecessor. The successor to the Cayman R was the Cayman GTS as a more powerful and therefore sportier model of the series with an additional output of 10 hp.

The successor to the Cayman (981c) was presented under the name 718 Cayman in April 2016 at the auto show in Beijing . Like the 718 Boxster , which was presented at the beginning of 2016, it now bears the numbers 718 in its name, which are intended to remind of the earlier Porsche 718 racing car . The connection is derived from the fact that both the 718 and the new 982 model series (718 Boxster / 718 Cayman) have 4-cylinder engines. In addition, turbo technology was introduced in the Cayman / Boxster for the first time.

Cayman GT4

At the Geneva Motor Show 2015, the Cayman GT4 was presented as the most powerful and sportiest variant of the Cayman. The 3.8-liter boxer engine comes from the Porsche 911 Carrera S (991). The front axle, parts of the rear axle and brakes come from the Porsche 911 GT3 (991). The toe, camber, vehicle height and stabilizers can be set on the chassis. Due to these different chassis parts, the Cayman GT4 has a different wheelbase compared to the Cayman, Cayman S and Cayman GTS models.

Facelift

As with the Boxster (Type 981) , the wheelbase has grown and the body overhangs have been reduced. As with all Porsche models since the Panamera (type 970), the exterior mirrors are no longer in the window triangle, but rather on the doors. The rear window has been enlarged. It is no longer embedded in the frame of the tailgate as in the predecessor, but is flush with the outside. The higher positioning in terms of price and performance compared to the convertible, which is unusual in the market, has remained in the second generation.
