Hermínia Silva
Hermínia Silva Leite Guerreiro (born October 23, 1907 in Lisbon , † June 13, 1993 ibid) was a Portuguese actress and singer, especially of Fado .
Life
She grew up in the Bairro do Castelo district below the eponymous castle Castelo de São Jorge , a simple district of Lisbon. There, as a teenager, she began singing and playing amateur theater in neighborhood cultural centers. From 1926 she began to appear as a professional actress in the city's popular revue theaters . In the following years she played in various theaters and sang operas, but also fado in bars of the genre. Since the 1930s she has also made recordings that were released as shellac records by HMV . She also took part in some of the successful comedies of Portuguese film of the 1930s and 1940s, which further increased her popularity as a humorous, folk artist.
From 1958 to 1982 she ran her own fado restaurant with the Solar da Hermínia and from 1962 to 1973 the weekend restaurant Pôr do Sol in Benavente , where she held fado evenings with singers such as Amália Rodrigues or Alfredo Marceneiro and folk dance performances. Even if it appeared less often due to its age, it was in the public eye again and again until she died on June 13, 1993 in her hometown.
reception
She was recognized as an actress, especially as a fado singer, among her colleagues, in particular Alfredo Marceneiro stood out as an admirer. For her popular and impulsive appearances as a singer and actress alike, she was extremely popular with the general public and remained so in advanced age. In 1970 she recorded a 4-song EP in which, with a twinkle in her eye, she ironically ironized the Anglo-Saxon teeanger music and the hippie movement called Yé-Yé .
Even after her death in 1993, she remained popular as the artistic embodiment of the cheerful woman with typical Portuguese character traits, but was also unforgettable as a style-defining singer. So refer z. B. OqueStrada explicitly points to her on her successful album in a series of her inspirations, and CD releases with her work continue to appear 15 years after her death.
A number of streets in Portugal are named after her.
