O Costa do Castelo (English: The Costa from the Castelo district) is a Portuguese comedy film from 1943.

action

Daniel, who comes from a wealthy family, pretends to be a simple chauffeur and sublet a room so that he can be close to Luisinha, who also lives there. The carefree fun-loving Simplícito Costa, who navigates all adversities with cunning, also lives there to sublet, and ensures a turbulent and entertaining daily routine in the village-like district. This is located on the slope below the Castelo de São Jorge , in the middle of Lisbon .

When Daniel's true identity emerges, the lives of everyone involved take a surprising turn.

reception

The film, designed as a carefree comedy, is still one of the most popular representatives of Portuguese cinema of the 1940s. In particular, the popular António Silva and the young Milú , popular figures and ideal of beauty of their time, attracted a large audience. The emphasis on typically Portuguese motifs in the scenery and songs, along with a number of comical scenes and dialogues, made the film a success. Some of the songs mostly sung by Milú in the film became popular hits in Portugal, such as Minha Casinha , which the band Xutos & Pontapés made their breakthrough in 1987.

The film was shown several times on the public television service RTP and, after restoration by the Cinemateca Portuguesa , was re-released several times by Lusomundo, first as a VHS cassette, and in 2002 as a DVD .
