Oquestrada is a Portuguese folk / pop - band , often of world music is assigned. They come from the greater Lisbon area and partly from Margem Sul .

history

The theater actress and musician Marta Miranda and the French musician and organizer Jean Marc Pablo founded their musical project on the Margem Sul do Tejo opposite Lisbon . They invited João Lima to bring his Portuguese guitar to their project and the three gave their first concert in 2002. They put the name of the band together from the words Orquestra ("orchestra") and Estrada ("street"), as a reference to their idea of a mobile entertainment orchestra with the simplest means. "O'QueEstrada" onomatopoeic also means "Oh, what a street" and is a playful, ambiguous underlining of its entertainment claim and its open, overarching orientation.

More and more concerts followed, both in small bars and pubs ("tascas"), as well as at village festivals across the country, next to regular venues. Their lively music with its concept of a suburban orchestra, like a mobile cabaret theater, became increasingly popular as a result. After a first mini CD in 2007, Sony Music released their first album in 2009 , which reached the Portuguese sales charts and gold status . In 2011 it was re-released as a new recording and repeatedly hit the country's charts.

Oquestrada also became known internationally, and they made several tours through Europe. In Germany, their album was released by Jaro Medien in 2010 , and they appeared on radio and television programs, around November 4th on Inas Nacht im Erste .

Style and reception

OqueStrada's music is based on the traditions and tastes of the common people in the pubs ("tascas") of the suburbs and the bars of the immigrants, especially from the Cape Verde Islands and their acoustic musical styles. They played in these pubs, but also gave concerts in many other places and occasions, for example at village festivals, but also in conventional venues and clubs. Similar to Deolinda before , Oquestrada hit the nerve of the times in Portugal, which is still in the process of identity-seeking change, with the gradually disappearing traditions of a rural-dominated Portugal and the development of an urban EU country. His middle and younger generations often playfully deal with old traditions and combine them with modernity. Oquestrada stand in this tradition, whereby they also emphasize the lively, popular folklore, and not just fado, which for them is above all the fado of the common people in the backyards and alleys of Lisbon's old town quarters such as Alfama .

Played with predominantly acoustic and partly improvised instruments, they stand out from other music groups, both through their carefree musical mix of styles, as well as through their humorous texts, characterized by joie de vivre and subliminal criticism, and their references to the customs of the simple population of Portugal. Both music and lyrics combine the listening habits and traditions of older and younger classes. This explains the surprisingly high sales figures, while other listening habits in Portugal largely correspond to the international music business.

Internationally, their lively, happy performances caused a sensation, especially among those interested in music in the styles known as world music. Since Oquestrada's performances stand in contrast to the Fado concerts, which is generally the best-known Portuguese form of music, they have often been able to surprise internationally. As a result, OqueStrada received a wealth of positive reviews in the European press.
