Benavente is a vila (small town) and a district of the same name ( concelho ) in Portugal .
history
The place was created in 1199 through settlement of the contested areas in the course of the Reconquista . Benavente received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1200 , which was confirmed by King Sancho I in 1218 and renewed and expanded by King Manuel I in 1516 .

Benavente is the administrative seat of a district of the same name ( concelho ) in the Santarém district . The neighboring regions are (starting clockwise in the north): Salvaterra de Magos , Coruche , Montijo , Palmela , Alcochete , Vila Franca de Xira , Azambuja and the Tagus Delta .
