Ferreira do Zêzere is a small town in Portugal . The place is known for its surrounding pristine nature, where water sports are popular. In the district of Ferreira do Zêzere lies the village of Dornes , which became known nationwide in 2007 through the feature film dot.com .

history

Portugal's first king D. Afonso Henriques gave the area to the Knights Templar in 1159 , who named it riba-Zêzere (above the Zêzere). The territory that had fallen back to King D. Sancho I was handed over to D. Pedro Ferreira in 1190 in recognition of his services in the battles against the Moors . The later place name is traced back to this knight who, as ruler of the area, gave the place its first town rights in 1222. The nearby river Zêzere continued to provide the second part of the name as a geographical reference point. In 1319 the Order of Christ received the area. In 1362 its head, D. Nuno Rodrigues Freire de Andrade, began building the town hall.

In the course of his administrative reforms, King D. Manuel I renewed the town charter , which was also granted by King D. João III in 1531 . to a small town ( Vila ) was raised.

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg , the district of Ferreira do Zêzere was redesigned and received its current form in 1836 with the affiliated communities Águas Belas, Areias, Beco, Chãos, Dornes, Paio Mendes and Pias.
