View of Dornes on the Zêzere River

geography

The place is on a pointed headland that protrudes into the river ( Rio Zêzere ). Since the construction of the Castelo do Bode dam shortly before its confluence with the Tejo near Constância , the Rio Zêzere has resembled a long winding lake all the way up behind Dornes. The hilly landscape dominated by eucalyptus and mixed forest rises all around from the banks . Dornes is 140 km north of Lisbon and 165 km south of Porto .

history

Despite its remote location, the place was already settled by the Romans . The place received city rights ("Foral") in 1513 from King Manuel I and remained an independent district (" Concelho ") until it was assigned to the district of Ferreira do Zêzere in 1836. In the 1950s, the Zêzere rose sharply with the construction of the Castelo de Bode dam and caused part of the village to sink in the water. Since then, the upper part of the village has been on the pointed peninsula that remained behind.

Sights and culture

The pentagonal tower
Back of the tower

The Torre de Dornes ("Tower of Dornes") was built on the remains of a Roman tower attributed to Quintus Sertorius , which served to secure the gold mining practiced here on the Rio Zêzere. As a result of the Reconquista , the tower was rebuilt as part of the Tejo fortifications and defended by the Knights Templar . It is a rare pentagonal specimen, in its medieval building material are u. a. Slate and limestone have been used. In addition to depictions of warriors, the tombs of Templars can be seen inside. From the 16th century the torre was only used as a bell tower.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pranto (“Church of Our Lady of Lament”), built in its shadow, therefore has no bell tower. It was built in 1285 by Rainha Santa Isabel (Queen Elisabeth of Portugal ) and has been a listed building since 1943. In the church, besides the pipe organ and azulejo linings, the various figures from the 15th century are worth seeing. The church and the surrounding fairground are the goal of a 3 km long way of the cross with 14 stations. Every year between Easter and September up to 40 Círios (English: "candle parades") called processions from the surrounding places take place here. The highlight of the Círios is August 15, when the big local festival takes place. Since 1999, every 2 years will also be on the last weekend of August "CIRIUS" - Passion Play along the Way of the Cross listed.

The musical association Associação Recreativa Filarmónica Frazoeirense (ARFF) in Dornes was founded in 1841. Alfredo Keil created the hymn A Portuguesa with the ARFF in 1890, which became the national anthem that is still valid today with the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. The band, which has now released a CD, and the music school it runs are important cultural players in the community.

On March 24, 2007, the film " dot.com " (directed by Luís Galvão Teles ) that was shot here had a festive preview in Dornes. A plaque on the stairs to the fairground commemorates the film premiere and the visit by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva on the occasion.
