Walter Dötsch (born August 19, 1909 in Sprottau , Sprottau district , province of Silesia , † November 28, 1987 in Bitterfeld ) was a German painter in the GDR . He was one of the representatives of the " Bitterfeld Way " and one of the pioneers of socialist realism .

Life

Dötsch studied at the Königsberg Art Academy and the Breslau Art Academy with Oskar Schlemmer , and later also at the Bauhaus Dessau . From 1945 he lived as a freelance artist in Bitterfeld . His works were exhibited at the German Art Exhibition of the GDR in Dresden in 1953, 1962 and 1967 . During his artistic activity there he led two painting circles, u. a. the painting circle of the VEB Filmfabrik Wolfen , which was founded in 1949 and still exists today (painting association "Neue Schenke" Wolfen eV). So Dötsch acted entirely on behalf of the Bitterfelder Weg , which called on the workers of the GDR to be creative. He led both painting circles until his death in 1987.

In 1952 Walter Dötsch signed a contract with the Bitterfeld Electrochemical Combine , which obliged him to conduct artistic studies in the factory. On October 7, 1959, the "Nikolai Mamai" brigade of the Bitterfeld combine accepted him as an honorary member.

As an artist, Walter Dötsch used various painting techniques, such as ink, watercolor, oil and acrylic. His works are today u. a. owned by the German Historical Museum (DHM) in Berlin and the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB). The painting by the Mamai Brigade was Dötsch's best-known work. It was rated by critics as "legendary" and "incunabula of the fine arts of the GDR".
