Paio Mendes is a former parish ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese county of Ferreira do Zêzere . It has 495 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The place was founded in the 13th century by the knight Paio Mendes, as part of the settlement policy after the Reconquista . The village belonged to the Castelo de Ceras area , which Portugal's first king D. Afonso Henriques assigned to the Knights Templar . Until 1311 the area was under the Knights Templar. After its dissolution in 1319, the area became the property of the Christ Knights, the successor order of the Templars. In the course of the dissolution and expropriation of all ecclesiastical orders in Portugal in 1834, after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the rule of the order over this area also ended. Paio Mendes became a municipality in the district of Dornes, since its dissolution in 1836 the municipality has belonged to the Ferreira do Zêzere district.
