history

Figueiró dos Vinhos received town charter in 1204 . King Manuel I renewed the town charter ( Foral ) on April 16, 1514. From the 17th century, two monasteries built here and the beginning of the mining of iron ore and its processing in the community ensured some development.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the place became known as a place of work for various artists. The painters José Malhoa (1855–1933) and Henrique Pinto (1853–1912) died here, as did the sculptor Simões de Almeida (1844–1926) , who was also born here .
