Penela and its castle

geography

Penela is about 20 km south of the district capital Coimbra .

The Aguas Romanas Park

history

The Romans had a fortification here that was destroyed by the Vandals . The fortress that was subsequently built here was conquered by the Arabs in the 8th century . These were expelled by Ferdinand I in the course of the Reconquista , and D.Sisnando became ruler of Penela as Count of Coimbra. Even before the independent Kingdom of Portugal was founded , Penela received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1137 , from D.Afonso Henriques . After another Arab invasion, Penela was finally retaken in 1148 .

In the Portuguese Revolution of 1383 , the inhabitants of Penela fought on the side of the proponents of John I , against the will of the ruler of the city. In 1514 King Manuel I renewed the city charter .
