Tábua is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 3542 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The place Tábua never received its own town charter, the present-day district rather grew out of various smaller settlements. It was first mentioned in the 12th century, but numerous finds show that it was inhabited during the Roman occupation. In 1342 King D. Afonso IV entrusted the owners of the area, the de Cunha family , with local jurisdiction, which came closest to a town charter. Since 1853 Tábua has been the seat of an independent district.

Culture and sights

Among the various architectural monuments of the district, which include mansions , sacred buildings and various historical public buildings, there is also the listed, historic town center of Tábua.

Cultural institutions include the municipal library Biblioteca Municipal de João Brandão , which is housed in a historic building that originally housed the city administration, prison and court.

The thematic circular routes Historical Tábua (Roteiro Histórico-Natural do Município), Wine Route des Dão (Rota dos Vinhos Dão) and Cheese Route Queijo Serra da Estrela (Região Demarcada do Queijo da Serra da Estrela) lead through the district.
