Miranda do Corvo is a vila and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 7614 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The place was officially mentioned for the first time as a fortification, which was conquered by the Arabs in 1116 and partially destroyed. D.Afonso Henriques granted the place, after its reconquest in the course of the Reconquista , city rights for the first time in 1136 and rebuilt the fortress. Since the reign of D.Afonso II. (1211-1223) Miranda is an independent circle (concelho). The circle was significantly enlarged through incorporations, especially in the course of the administrative reforms in the middle of the 19th century. Miranda received its current surname do Corvo (English: the raven), after changing earlier names, only in the 16th century.
In the course of the battles at the end of the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , the place suffered extensive damage to people and buildings in 1811.
