Rio Vide (also Rio de Vide ) is a locality and former municipality in Portugal .

history

The place name goes back to the river Rio Torto, which was ascribed health-promoting powers in the Middle Ages and was therefore called the river of life or life-giving river (from Portuguese Vida = life). The establishment of a local leprosy station in 1210 corresponded to the will of King Sancho I and favored the development of the place, which had already received its first town charter in 1201. In 1385 King D. João I confirmed the town charter.

Until 1839 the municipality of Rio Vide was part of the Lousã district . In 1840 it was incorporated into the Semide district until it was dissolved in 1853. Since then, Rio Vide has been a municipality in the Miranda do Corvo district, until it was dissolved in 2013 as part of the regional reform in Portugal and merged with Semide to form a new municipality.
