The place was repopulated in the course of the Reconquista and as a small town ( Vila ) seat of a district. The place grew in particular, since the middle of the 12th century here the monastery Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Semide , also Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Assunção was built. In the 16th century it was significantly expanded under the Bishop of Coimbra, and in 1541 the king visited the monastery.
