Arganil is a vila and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 7730 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Archaeological excavations prove a settlement of the community since the Copper Age . At the time of the Roman occupation , the local Lusitanian settlement was converted into a Roman garrison site . Arganil received its first city rights in 1134, which were renewed in 1514 by King Manuel I.
In 1809, Arganil was a camp for the Portuguese-British army of Wellington against the Napoleonic invasions, which also included the sacking of Arganil by the troops of the French general Massena in 1811.
Since 1853 different parishes ( Freguesias ) have been assigned to the district ( concelho ) Arganil , most recently in 1962 the parish Moura da Serra .

After a period of growth, especially after a series of incorporations from 1853, the structurally weak region was increasingly affected by emigration and rural exodus from the middle of the 20th century.

Culture and sights
Due to its long history, its different villages and its varied mountain and forest landscapes, the Arganil district has a variety of sights.
With Piódão , one of the historic villages of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal lies in the circle. In addition, many traditional slate villages are part of the district, including Benfeita and Vila Cova de Alva, two places on the route Aldeias do Xisto . Thematically sorted and signposted hiking trails have been created, some with regional expansion.
The Cascata da Fraga da Pena waterfall is in the Arganil district , some river baths and the Albufeira das Fronhas reservoir offer a wide range of water sports and swimming opportunities. The mountain area of the Serra do Açor (Eng .: Habichtsgebirge) is under nature protection and includes the 68 hectare forest area Mata da Margaraça , one of the last remaining original forests in Portugal.
One of the numerous protected monuments in the district is the medieval monastery Mosteiro de Folques (also Mosteiro de São Pedro ), which has been expanded several times since then , as well as a large number of sacred buildings , some historical town centers, mansions and historical public buildings. The site of a Roman deposit that goes back to a hill fort ( Portuguese : Castro ) of the Celtiberians is also registered as a monument, the Castro da Lomba do Canho in Secarias .
Some culturally significant places in the district are the Teatro Alves Coelho in Arganil, which was opened in 1954 and is also listed , the Biblioteca Municipal Miguel Torga in Arganil and the Biblioteca Alberto Martins de Carvalho in Coja , the public gallery Sala de Exposições Temporárias Guilherme Filipe with changing art exhibitions and the Centro Interpretativo de Arte Rupestre de Chãs d'Égua , an information center on the rock art routes of the district.
