José Alves Matoso

José Alves Matoso (born February 18, 1860 in Coja , Arganil parish , Coimbra district , Portugal ; † February 1, 1952 in Guarda , Portugal) was a Portuguese clergyman and bishop of Guarda from 1914 to 1952.

Live and act

Matoso came from the community of Coja as the son of Manuel Alves and Guiomar da Fonseca. From 1880 he studied theology in Coimbra . After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in 1882 and worked as such, from 1891 he was canon in Coimbra, in 1900 he was appointed prelate .

On October 3, 1914 he was by Pope Benedict XV. appointed Bishop of Guarda and officially took office on April 18, 1915. He remained in the office of bishop for thirty-seven years and died on February 1, 1952 at the age of 91.

In his home parish Coja there is a bust in memory of the bishop. A commemorative publication on the life and term of office of the bishop was published on his ninetieth birthday. A street in Guarda is named after him.
