São Martinho da Cortiça is a place and a municipality in Portugal .

history

Finds such as excavations of houses, remains of mines and coins confirm the presence of Romans in what is now the municipality through which the Roman road from Coimbra to Salamanca led.

The present community can possibly be traced back to the beginning of the Reconquista , in the time after the first conquest of Coimbra by the Arabs in the year 878. The first official mention of the place is in the year 1141.

In 1355 the municipality belonged to the Pombeiro da Beira district and encompassed a larger area, which also included what is now the municipality of Carapinha .

In the 15th century, the district of Sanguinheda was re-created by outsourcing the places Sanguinheda and Carapinha. King D. Manuel gave Sanguinheda city rights on November 2, 1518, the municipality of São Martinho da Cortiça belonged to the district.

In the course of the Napoleonic invasions , the municipality was the scene of French pillage in 1811, and some minor skirmishes took place around the bridge of Mucela.

In the liberal civil war, the Miguelistenkrieg , the community was again the victim of looting and destruction in 1832 in the course of acts of revenge by the anti-liberal Miguelisten .

In the administrative reforms after the end of the Miguelistenkrieg in 1834, the district of Sanguinheda was dissolved in 1836. The municipality of São Martinho da Cortiça changed its affiliation to belong to Arganil since 1855.
