history

King D. Manuel gave the place city rights on November 10, 1513. The place thus became the seat of its own administrative district, which consisted of the two communities Pombeiro da Beira and São Martinho da Cortiça .

In the course of the administrative reforms after the liberal Miguelistenkrieg in 1834, the Pombeiro da Beira district was dissolved in 1836 and Arganil was incorporated.
