geography

Benfeita is 21 km east of the county seat of Arganil, and 79 km east of the district capital Coimbra .

history

The place was officially documented for the first time in 1196. The municipality of Benfeita belonged to the district of Pinheiro de Coja , to belong to the district of Coja after its dissolution in 1836 . When this was dissolved in 1855, the authorities incorporated Benfeita into Arganil County.

Culture, sports and sights

The Cascata da Fraga da Pena waterfall

Embedded in the wooded foothills of the Iberian Scheidegebirge , the place is known for the nature of its surroundings and for its old buildings. It is part of the route of the slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto . Restored mills, olive presses and house distilleries can be viewed here, and hiking trails lead through the surrounding area.

In 2008, director Miguel Gomes shot his surprise hit Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto ( Eng : that beloved month of August) here.
