Ferraria de São João (sometimes also Ferreira de São João ) is a Portuguese village in the municipality ( Freguesia ) of Cumeeira , in the district ( concelho ) of Penela .

geography

The village is located about 5 km east of the municipality in Cumeira, about 15 km southeast of the county town of Penela and about 45 km south of the district capital Coimbra . It is located in the almost untouched nature between the Serra do Sicó and the Serra da Lousã , in the foothills of the Iberian Divide Mountains .

Culture and sights

It is one of the traditional slate villages in the region and belongs to the nationally advertised route of the Aldeias do Xisto . It stands out from the other slate villages because of the traditional use of additional quartz stone and its traditional animal shelters and stables. A scenic hiking trail leads to the nearby village of Casal de São Simão , which is also part of the Aldeias do Xisto . There are also mountain bike routes (called BTT in Portugal) here. Various projects aim to preserve the local, rural traditions on the one hand, and to educate and convey values to children on the other. Schoolchildren from the surrounding areas work here on beds with seasonal vegetables under the guidance of the local population. In addition to other initiatives that have already been practiced, further educational projects are being planned.

In the village, three modernly renovated Turismo rural houses offer overnight accommodation, while restaurants are only available in neighboring towns.

The village occasionally made a name for itself nationwide, for example through its initiative to adopt 87 of its cork oaks ( Portuguese: Sobreiro ). Interested parties can purchase staggered shares of 40, 60 or 80 euros according to the size of the tree and are given the opportunity to attach some personal characteristics to the tree and participate in the sale of the future cork harvest. The campaign should also draw attention to the endangerment of this particular tree and arouse interest in it. The village also regularly takes part in other, nationwide widespread visitor initiatives of the Aldeias do Xisto .
