Janeiro de Baixo is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Pampilhosa da Serra . It has 669 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
In the 16th or 17th century a large landowner bequeathed his two sons an area above and below the river Zêzere , from which the Janeiro de Cima (German: Upper Janeiro) and the opposite Janeiro de Baixo arose. There were already settlements in the areas, the older one being today's Janeiro de Baixo , which already had ecclesiastically registered residents in 1320. It was published in 1600 in a survey by the Portuguese Crown , which has owned the area since it was previously surrendered by the Order of Christ . The community belonged to the district of Fajão until it came to the district of Pampilhosa da Serra with its dissolution in 1855, to which it has since been assigned.
Culture and sights
The place is part of the traditional slate villages of the region, the Aldeias do Xisto . At the Rio Zêzere you can visit watermills, hiking trails lead through the municipal area, and a river pool offers swimming and water sports, which are also offered in an even greater variety at the nearby Barragem de Santa Luzia reservoir .
The presumably medieval parish church Igreja Paroquial de Janeiro de Baixo (also Igreja de São Domingos ) was renovated in the late 18th century and received its bell tower in the 19th century. It is a listed building.
