geography

Candal is located 20 km north of the county town of São Pedro do Sul.

history

Remains of a hill fort (port .: Castro) of the Celtiberians and various traces of the subsequent Roman occupation, such as burial sites , were found in the municipality . The current place was first officially mentioned in a document from 1257, as part of the municipality of Alafões . In 1527 Candal was part of the municipality of Carvalhais , and from 1896 belonged to the municipality of Covelo de Paivó . Shortly afterwards the community became independent.

Culture and sights

The preserved town center of Candal has a number of houses in the typical regional slate building style. The place is part of the 27 historical slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto .

Among the six listed buildings of the municipality is the bridge over the river Ribeira de Paivô , and the older main church ( Igreja Matriz ) of the village, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Natividade (English: Church of Our Lady of the Fertility).

The coveted ore was mined in the now disused tungsten mines during the Second World War .

The area around the place is determined by the wooded elevations of the Serra da Arada , and by watercourses and small waterfalls. Hiking trails run through the community.

administration

The municipality consists of the following localities:

  • Candal
  • Póvoa das Leiras
  • Coelheira
