Janeiro de Cima is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Fundão district in Portugal . It has 306 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
geography
The place is about 45 km west of the district town Fundão, and about 50 km northwest of the district capital Castelo Branco .
history
In the 16th or 17th century a large landowner bequeathed his two sons an area above and below the river Zêzere , from which the Janeiro de Cima (German: Upper Janeiro) and the opposite Janeiro de Baixo arose. There were already settlements in the areas, the older of which is today's Janeiro de Baixo , which already had ecclesiastical residents in 1320.
Culture and sights
The place belongs to the route of the traditional slate villages of the region, the Aldeias do Xisto .
Various sacred buildings are listed as historical monuments , including the Capela do Divino Espírito Santo (Chapel of the Divine Holy Spirit), built in the 20th century on the remains of the old chapel from the 16th century , and the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Janeiro de Cima (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ).
