Castelo Novo is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Fundão district in Portugal . It has 406 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The place belongs to the twelve historical villages, the Aldeias Históricas .
geography
Located about 700 meters high in the Serra da Gardunha , the place is 15 km south of the district town of Fundão.
history
Settled since the Neolithic Age, only a few traces of its later inhabitants have remained, including stone facilities for the wine and olive oil press from the 7th century, which probably goes back to Roman facilities, possibly also of Arab or Visigoth origins. The place has been documented under its current name since 1208. The occasionally widespread thesis that Gualdim Pais strengthened the remains of the fortress here and founded the present-day site has not been proven. In 1290 King D Dinis rebuilt the decaying castle. The Order of Christ had its seat here in its early phase.
In 1510 King Manuel I renewed the town charter ( Foral ) of the place after he renewed the castle complex. Castelo Novo was the seat of an independent district (concelho) until 1835, when it became part of the Alpedrinha district . Since its dissolution in 1855, the place has belonged to the Fundão district.
Culture and sights
Among its numerous protected monuments are sacred buildings , mansions , fountains and its train station, the Linha da Beira Baixa . In particular, the castle from the 13th century should be mentioned here. After the establishment of the state Aldeias Históricas initiative, some of the town's mansions were converted into facilities for rural tourism , such as the listed house Casa de São Mateus (also Casa de Castelo Novo ).
