geography

Sortelha is 14 kilometers west of the district town of Sabugal and about 40 kilometers south of the district capital Guarda , at an altitude of about 760 meters.

history

The traces of Iron Age settlement, a Celtiberian hill fort (port .: Castro ), and a Roman road bear witness to a long history. The first documented mention of the place comes from the year 1181, when King Sancho I had the castle built and settled. The place was important both in the Reconquista and in the defense of the independent Kingdom of Portugal against the kingdoms of León and Castile . King Sancho II gave Sortelha town rights ( Foral ) in 1228 . King D.Dinis renewed the town charter and expanded the place and its fortress, but Sortelha lost its importance after the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297, especially in favor of Sabugal with its strategically more important location and its more fertile soils.

King Manuel I renewed the city rights and rebuilt the decaying fortifications. Trade increased here and the population increased, including some wealthy and noble families. In 1527, King D. João III created the title of Count von Sortelha (port .: Conde de Sortelha). During the Restoration War 1640–1668, the place was in the area of war operations. During the Napoleonic invasions, the area was again the scene of acts of war, as a result of which parts of Sortelha's city walls were destroyed in 1810. Until 1885 the place was the seat of an independent district and has since been part of the district of Sabugal.

In 1994 the place was declared an Aldeia Histórica (German: historic village) and thus recognized as particularly worthy of protection and funding, and in 1998 it was integrated into the newly created project of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal . Since then, the place has stabilized its population.

Surname

The place name probably goes back etymologically via Sortija or Sortela to the concept of the ring (today's Portuguese : Anel ), which appeared here in the meanings of a magic ring, a ring of knight games , and the forge ring . Accordingly, the city's coat of arms shows a ruby ring over a castle. Other assumptions see the actual origin of the place name in the medieval term variety , which today means luck in German , but at that time mainly described a unit of area for arable land. Sorticula was therefore a small piece of land.

Culture, sports and sights

Churches, mansions , fountains and former public buildings are among the 37 listed, predominantly granite buildings in the municipality . Special mention should be made of the castle complex and city walls from the 13th century. The house from the 14th century called Casa Árabe (German: Arab House) is not the work of the Arabs who have never lived here , but was called by the population because of its misinterpreted Gothic symbols. It was restored in several stages between 1989 and 1997 and is now used as a facility for the rural tourism.

Medieval markets and jousting games take place in Sortelha,
