As early as 500 BC The place was inhabited by Celtiberian Turdulians and later Lusitanians . Their hill fort (Portuguese: Castro) was captured and razed by the Romans . Few traces have survived from its time as part of the Visigoth Empire . The Arabs built a fortress here again, which Ferdinand I (León) conquered from them for the first time in 1039. In 1170 Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques , conquered the place and left the Convento de Stª there. Mª. de Aguiar build. After a renewed invasion of the Moors , King D.Sancho was able to finally conquer the place. In 1209 the place received city rights (Foral) for the first time. Castelo Rodrigo has been Portuguese for good since the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297. Under the kings D.Dinis , D.fernando I. and D.João I was further expanded the fortress, in the course of various disputes with the Kingdom of Castile . King Manuel I had the decaying fortress rebuilt in 1500 and again granted the place city rights in 1508.

In the restoration war to regain the independence of Portugal from 1640 Castelo Rodrigo was a significant strategic defense post. On July 7, 1664, the Portuguese army under Pedro Jacques de Magalhães defeated the Spanish army under the Duke of Ossuna . Until the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, the area around Castelo Rodrigo remained a scene of disputes.

In the Seven Years' War Castelo Rodrigo was destroyed 1,762th After the further destruction and looting in 1810, during the Napoleonic invasions, all the remaining families except for a few residents left the place, and S. Vicente da Figueira, not far below the high-lying Castelo Rodrigo, gained further importance in the course. In 1836 the growing community of S. Vicente became an independent district (concelho) and, in consideration of the historical place Castelo Rodrigo, was renamed Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.

Since 1994 Castelo Rodrigo has been one of the particularly well-preserved historical villages of the Aldeias Históricas , and thus enjoys special protection regulations and subsidies.
