Location of the municipality of Piódão in the Arganil district

Piódão is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Arganil . 178 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011). It is known nationwide for its slate architecture, and is one of the twelve historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas .

geography

Piódão is located in the far east of the Coimbra district , 29 km from the district town of Arganil. The village is located on an elevation of the Serra do Açor , one of the foothills of the Iberian Divide Mountains .

history

The place is officially mentioned for the first time in a survey made for King D. João III from 1527, as Casal do Piodão with only two families living here, and belonging to Villa da Voo ( Avô ). The inaccessible seclusion of the place often attracted refugees from the judiciary, such as Diogo Lopes Pacheco, one of the alleged murderers of Inês de Castro (1320–1355), or the rebel officer José do Telhado (1818–1875).

Since 1676 Piodão is an independent municipality. After the dissolution of the Avô district ( concelho ) in 1855, the parish became part of the Arganil district. At about the same time, the extensive isolation of Piodão ended after the royal road from Covilhã to Coimbra was built. In 1906 the seminary preschool of Piódão was closed and the place fell again into stagnation, which Father Manuel Fernandes Nogueira, who arrived here in 1886, tackled with numerous initiatives, such as innovations in vegetable cultivation and the renovation of the main church, which was threatened with decay. It was not until 1972, with the connection to today's county road, and the arrival of electricity, radio and television in 1976, that the place opened up and developed further.

The historic core of the village of Piódão has been a listed building since 1978.

The main church of Piodão

The city museum Núcleo Museológico do Piódão deals with the history of the place. One of the municipality's nine river baths has been set up on the river below the village, and there are six natural swimming pools in the municipality.

The main church ( Igreja Matriz ) of the village dates from the 17th century and is modeled on the main churches in the Alentejo , in particular that of Mértola , in the Mudéjar style. With its white, blue contrasting exterior, the church also stands out from the surrounding dark slate buildings. It was renovated in the 19th century and is now a listed building.

The biogenetic reserve of the Mata da Magaraça forest area, recognized by the Council of Europe , is 50 hectares in size and offers, in addition to its trees ( elms , Portuguese oaks , chestnuts , Portuguese cherry laurel ), the Fraga da Pena waterfall and old mills.

Various hiking trails run through the municipality, including the signposted, 4 km long percurso pedestre (German: footpath) from Piódão to Foz d'Égua, and the 10 km long Caminho de Xisto de Benfeita (German: slate path from Benfeita ), which as PR1 / AGN (Pequena Rota 1 / Arganil, Ger .: Small Round 1, Arganil) is marked.

The discovery of the nearby Bronze Age rock carvings , ( spirals ) and cart tracks in Chãs de Égua has increased the recreational value of the region.
