history

In 1991, the Portuguese central government started an initiative to preserve places with a historical center in the interior with a funding program. At the same time, economic impulses should be set in the more remote areas in the interior of the country, which have little benefit from the economic upturn.

The PPDR program ( Programa Operacional de Promoção do Desenvolvimento Regional Integrado ; German operational program for integrated regional development ) began in 1994 , as part of the second Quadro Comunitário de Apoio (German framework program for community support , 1994–1999)

In 1998 the Plano de Recuperação das Aldeias Históricas (German restoration plan of the historic villages ) started as part of this, and with the participation of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF, port .: FEDER ). The destination was the areas of the former Beira Alta and Beira Baixa regions , which are still affected by increasing rural exodus. The quality of life of the residents should be improved by improving and creating local infrastructure. In addition, through accompanying tourism marketing, small and medium-sized companies, for example in tourism rural , should be created that give the population permanent prospects on site.

The selection of the locations was based on criteria such as cultural diversity, the number of historical monuments, and the diversity of traditional, still living traditions. Ten locations were included in the program in this first phase. Castelo Bom should also be included, but limited to ten.

With the third Quadro Comunitário de Apoio (2000–2006), the program was expanded and two more locations were added.

reception

The Aldeia Histórica Monsanto

The Aldeias Históricas initiative met with a positive response from the general public. Some interventions in the context of the conservation measures of the villages have been criticized by experts as distortions or inadmissible modernization, but the program is generally seen by them as successful. The acceptance is very high and the name Aldeias Históricas has been a well-known brand name across the country ever since. The participating locations are recommended by the media as destinations for excursions and short breaks. As a result, further initiatives to preserve regional traditions of the Aldeias Históricas , such as the gastronomy, emerged.

On his travels, which he described in his book Viagem a Portugal (German trip to Portugal , German title: Die Portugiesische Reise ) in 1981 , the Nobel Prize winner for literature José Saramago visited all of today's Aldeias Históricas , with the exception of Piódão.
