Beira Alta ( German roughly: Upper border area) is a former province (or natural region) of Portugal . It was originally founded in the 19th century to separate part of the territory of the former Beira Province .

The Beira Alta was officially re-established by the administrative reform of 1936 in contrast to the district of Viseu to the district of Guarda. The provinces of 1936 were almost never used in practice, and disappeared from the administrative vocabulary (but not from the everyday vocabulary of the Portuguese) with the entry into force of the 1976 constitution.

Beira Alta borders in the north on Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro , in the northwest on Douro Litoral , in the west and southwest on Beira Litoral , in the south on Beira Baixa and also on the Spanish province of Salamanca , in Castile-León .

It consisted of 32 counties, almost all of which are now part of the Guarda and Viseu counties and two other counties of the former Coimbra county. The government of Beira Alta was based in the city of Viseu.

Coimbra District: Oliveira do Hospital, Tábua. Guarda district: Aguiar da Beira, Almeida, Celorico von Beira, en Figueira Castelo Rodrigo, Fornos en Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Meda, Pinhel, Sabugal, Seia, Trancoso. District Viseu: Carregal Sal, Castro Daire, Mangualde, Moimenta da Beira, Mortágua, There, Oliveira en Frades, Penalva do Castelo Lisbon, Santa Comba Dão, Sao Pedro do Sul Sátão, Sernancelhe, Tarouca, Tondela, Vila Nova En Paiva, Viseu , Vouzela.

For some geographers, the province, together with the Beira Baixa, and sometimes also with the inclusion of Beira Trasmontana, is considered a larger geographical unit: Beira Interior.

Currently, its territory is divided by the North and Central Regions, part of which belong to the Douro sub-region (Councils of the Moimenta of Beira, Lisbon and Sernancelhe Tarouca) and part to the sub-regions of Beira Interior North, Cova Da Beira, Die Tell - Lafões and a small part even to the Pinhal Interior Norte. It is part of the sub-region around Douro (consisting of Moimenta Beira, Penedono, Sernancelhe and Tarouca), and secondly a part of the sub-regions Da Beira Interior Norte, Cova DA Beira and Dão Lafões.
