Douro Litoral
Douro Litoral (dt. About: Douro coastal area) was one of the eleven provinces of Portugal from 1936 to 1976 . Today they only exist in colloquial language or in historically based terms.
Porto was the capital of the province, which included the present-day Porto district , four districts ( concelhos ) of the Aveiro district ( Arouca , Castelo de Paiva , Espinho and Santa Maria da Feira ), and two districts of the Viseu district ( Cinfães and Resende ). Bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the west , the other neighboring provinces were Minho in the north, Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in the northeast, Beira Alta in the southeast, and Beira Litoral in the south.
The province was characterized by diverse economic activity and by the eponymous Douro River and its wine-growing regions. It was also characterized by urban sprawl, which has increased significantly to this day, especially in the metropolitan area of Porto.
