The Aveiro District ( Distrito de Aveiro ) is a district of Portugal that belongs to the traditional Beira Litoral Province , with the exception of a few districts that are counted as part of the Douro Litoral . The district is bordered by the Porto district to the north, Viseu to the east and Coimbra to the south ; to the west is the Atlantic Ocean. The area of the district covers 2808 km², which is populated by 713,578 people. The capital of the district is the city of Aveiro . License plates for trailers: AV.

Most of the Aveiro district is less than 100 meters above sea level. It completely covers an approximately 40 km wide coastal plain, which is located in the south of the district. The main rivers are Vouga , Cértima , Alfusqueiro , Águeda and Antuão . Towards the north and east, the surface becomes hilly to mountainous. The coast consists of a lagoon landscape and is called Costa Nova , with a belt of dunes separating the sea from the calm waters of the Ria de Aveiro .
