Oliveira de Azeméis is a city ( Cidade ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 12,164 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The Roman roads from Olissipo ( Lisbon ) to Bracara Oppidum Augusta ( Braga ) and those from Conimbriga to Porto crossed here. Finds also prove a settlement from the 7th to the 10th century by Arab Berbers and Mozarabs . Today's place was officially mentioned for the first time in 922 as Villa Olivaria . Oliveira de Azeméis has been an independent circle since 1799 . The former Vila (small town) was elevated to a city in 1984 . Since 2008 it has been run as part of the enlarged metropolitan area of Porto.
Culture and sights
Among the monuments of the city is the main church Igreja Matriz de Oliveira de Azeméis (also Igreja de São Miguel ) , which was built in the 18th century and dates back to a chapel from the 16th century . The Mannerist church is lined with azulejos at the entrance portal . a. Baroque altarpiece , an organ from the 18th century and Mannerist side altars made of gilded wood ( Talha dourada ). The pilgrimage church of Santuário de Nossa Senhora de la Salette was built after 1870. After a long drought, the population first took a procession up the hill on which today's chapel was then built. It is surrounded by a park, in which u. a. finds a fountain from the 7th century.
The historic center of the city is also a listed building as a whole, as are a number of mansions of emigrants who mostly made their fortune in Brazil .
Among the city's museums is the Casa-Museu Ferreira de Castro , the birthplace of the writer Ferreira de Castro , which is dedicated to his life and work, and also has an area as a local museum of local history. Other museums include the Museu Regional de Cucujães , the Mill and Bread Museum Núcleo Museológico do Moinho e do Pão and the Berço Vidreiro Glass Museum in La Salette.
Various hiking trails lead through the district, such as the Camino de Santiago Caminho Português , and signposted themed hiking trails, for example along the water mills or the traditional Espigueiro granaries ( Percurso dos Espigueiros ) scattered in the surrounding nature .
Since 1997, the Mercado à Moda Antiga (German: old-style market) has been held every year at the end of May , a medieval market- like event on local history and gastronomy. Sports
UD Oliveirense is the most important sports club in the district. He is known for his roller hockey and basketball departments and their international and national success. His soccer team is also a well-known name in Portuguese soccer , most recently playing in the second professional league ( Segunda Liga ). FC Cesarense from the municipality of Cesar is one of the other sports clubs in the district .
In 2003 the city hosted the roller hockey world championship , which Portugal won the world record. For the tournament, the largest roller hockey system ( stick ) in the world, the Pavilhão Salvador Machado sports hall , was built here in just 35 days . It is located in the Zona Educacional e Desportiva sports and education park , where the swimming facilities, which opened in 2009 and are designed for international competitions, are also located.
Since 2011, the city has hosted the XCO Cup Oliveira de Azeméis, a UCI Europe Tour cycle race , which, however, is not in the highest category. In May 2012, Oliveira de Azeméis is also the fourth stage of the national mountain bike long-distance cup ( Taça de Portugal de Maratonas BTT ).

A number of industrial companies are located in Oliveira de Azeméis, especially shoe factories, metal processing, plastics processing, suppliers to the automotive industry, textile industry, mattress and glass manufacturers. The food industry can also be found here, in particular dairy and rice processing companies. The household appliance manufacturer Flama is one of the best-known companies .
In addition to industry, agriculture, administration and trade are also important. Mainly corn, rice and grain are grown in the district, along with vegetables and other things. In addition, livestock farming is practiced, and tourism also plays a role, albeit subordinate.
