history

According to some theses, the place was founded by the Phoenicians under the name Vacuus (roughly: thrown out), according to others it was first founded by the Romans as Vacua (after a dried up tributary of the Rio Vouga ). However, large parts of today's district were still under water. Around the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1139 , the sea retreated further. In 1190 King Sancho I granted the town its first town charter ( Foral ), which were renewed by Manuel I in 1514 .

Culture and sights

Among the various architectural monuments of Vagos are in particular wind and water mills and sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Vagos (also Igreja de São Tiago ), which dates back to a chapel built in 1452 and after several extensions shows Baroque and Renaissance elements

A nature reserve begins in the north of the district with the Ria de Aveiro lagoon .

With the Museu do Brincar, there is a museum in Vagos in 2012 that is dedicated to childhood and children's play.

The metal festival Vagos Open Air has been taking place here every year since 2009, taking place on August 9th and 10th, 2013 at a new location, the more central Quinta do Ega estate , in front of the city.
