Norte Region (Portugal)

The Região Norte (German Region North ) is a region of Portugal . It includes the districts of Viana do Castelo , Porto , Vila Real , Bragança and Braga as a whole, as well as parts of the districts of Aveiro , Viseu and Guarda .

The neighboring region in the south is Região Centro . The Região Norte borders on Spain to the north and east . To the west is the Atlantic Ocean .

The area of the Região Norte covers 21,284 km². The region has a population of 3,689,713 inhabitants (2013).

In 2015, the regional gross domestic product per inhabitant, expressed in purchasing power standards , was 65% of the EU-28 average , making the Região Norte the economically weakest region in Portugal this year. In 2017 the unemployment rate was 9.8%.
