The Ave region is a statistical sub-region of Portugal and part of the Região Norte . While the majority of the districts belong to the Braga district , Mondim de Basto is assigned to the Vila Real district . In the northwest, Ave is bordered by Cávado , in the northeast by Alto Tâmega , in the southeast by Douro , in the south by Tâmega e Sousa and in the southwest by the metropolitan area of Porto .
