history

A settlement of the place in the Castro culture and further back to about the 4th millennium BC. BC is documented by finds and excavations, such as tombs and remains of ramparts ( Portuguese : Castro ). Other finds, such as ceramics, show the site's Roman past. Fafe was first officially documented in the 12th century. Since the 13th century Fafe was a municipality in the Monte Longo district, which in 1513 received renewed administrative rights ( Foral ) by King Manuel I.

Fafe later became the seat of the Santa Eulália Antiga district, and in 1836, in the course of the reforms of Manuel Passos , it was also named after the district. Fafe was promoted to vila (small town with administrative rights) in 1840 and a city in 1986.
