Porto Seguro , officially Município de Porto Seguro , is a coastal city in the south of the state of Bahia in Brazil on the South Atlantic.

According to an estimate by the IBGE statistics office on July 1, 2019, the city ​​had 148,686 inhabitants, called Porto-Segurens. The area was around 2286 km² in 2019. Since the 2010 census, it has seen an increase of around 20,000 inhabitants within 6 years.

history

Porto Seguro is considered to be the historical heritage of Brazil , as the Portuguese navigator and conqueror Pedro Álvares Cabral set foot on Brazilian soil for the first time near the city on April 22, 1500. The place name Porto Seguro means safe harbor and indicates the function of the place from the perspective of the seafarers who land here . The community is one of the oldest in Brazil and dates back to a foundation in 1534. June 30, 1534 is the date when the city was founded. The Vila de Porto Seguro received city status on June 30, 1891.

City administration

After her re-election in the local elections in 2016, Claudia Silva Santos Oliveira of the Partido Social Democrático (2011) (PSD) is the city prefect for the term 2017 to 2020 . The city's legislature, the first of which was inaugurated in 1772, has consisted of 17 city councilors since 2012. Evaí Fonseca Brito des Partido Humanista da Solidariedade (PHS) is President of the City Council Chamber (Câmara Municipal ).

Porto Seguro is divided into five districts: Porto Seguro (sede), Arraial d'Ajuda , Caraíva , Trancoso and Vale Verde . The districts comprise 35 bairros.

The climate in the southern summer brings temperatures of up to 34 ° C, while the temperature in winter is around 18 to 27 ° C.

Culture and tourism

No house with more than two floors may be built in the community. There has been an international airport since 1993 .

In addition to tourism, the Porto Seguro area also has agricultural activities (with cashew and coconut cultivation ) and cattle breeding. In recent years, large areas of forest have been planted with eucalyptus trees.

30 kilometers north of Porto Seguro is the Campo Bahia holiday resort , which the German national soccer team moved into for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .
