Agbodrafo (formerly Porto Seguro ) is a coastal city of Togo . It is located in the south of the country, about in the middle of the coast of Togo on the large lagoon between the Atlantic Ocean and the northwestern Lake Togo in the Maritime region . The capital Lomé is about 30 kilometers away. About 17 km to the east lies the border with the neighboring state of Benin .

history

The origin of the place was a Portuguese fort and a slave market , which was known under the Portuguese name Porto Seguro ( German Safe Harbor ). The place was also used as an entry and exit point, but lost its importance. With a protection treaty dated September 5, 1884, which was signed between the Imperial Consul Heinrich Randad and the local chief Mensah, the area was added to the German Empire as a colonial property and thus became part of the German colony of Togo . The slave trade was stopped by the German colonial masters.

There was a post and telegraph company in the village. The Catholic Steyler Mission Society maintained a main station with a church there. In 1905 the place received a railway connection through the Lomé – Aného railway.

Economy, tourism and attractions

The city lives mainly from agriculture and fishing and is now a popular seaside resort.

As Porto Seguro , the place was part of the slave coast . Accordingly, there are some testimonies from this time in the region, such as the House of Slaves ( English House of Slaves or after the previous owner Woold Home or French Maison des Esclave , locally known as Woold Homé ), which has been on the Tentative list for the UNESCO World Heritage is located as well as the Well of Chained Ones ( German about Quelle der Angeketteten or French Puits des Enchainés , known locally as Gatovoudo ), a well where the slaves took their last cleansing bath on African soil before embarking for America .
