Chloé Zhao ( Chinese 赵婷, Pinyin Zhao Ting ; * 31 March 1982 in Beijing ) is a mainly in the United States operating Chinese film director , screenwriter , film editor and film producer . At the Academy Awards 2021 she was honored for directing her film Nomadland , the winning film of the award ceremony.

Life

Chloé Zhao was born in Beijing. Her mother was a nurse and her father was a top manager at the Shougang Group , one of the largest steel companies in China. When her parents divorced, she went to secondary school. The father later remarried, so sitcom actress Song Dandan (宋丹丹) is her stepmother . She then went to boarding school in England, studied political science in Massachusetts and film production at the New York Tisch School of the Arts . Her directorial debut, Songs My Brothers Taught Me , was shown at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and subsequently at the Cannes Film Festival . She presented her critically acclaimed second film, the modern western The Rider , in Cannes in May 2017 in the side series Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.

Her third feature film Nomadland , an adaptation of the 2017 book Nomads of Work: Survival in the USA in the 21st Century by the American journalist Jessica Bruder , with Frances McDormand in the lead role, won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival the main prize of the festival. In addition, the film premiered in a simultaneous screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2020 , where it won the People's Choice Award . That evening the film was presented at the Telluride Film Festival and later screened at the New York Film Festival . Zhao came out first in the IndieWire Critics Poll 2020 for her directorial work. The film and Zhao also won the Golden Globe Award as a director . This makes Zhao the second woman (and the first woman of East Asian descent) in the long history of the Golden Globes to receive this prestigious award. At the Academy Awards in 2021 , Nomadland received three Academy Awards and three nominations, with Zhao himself winning in the categories of Best Director and Best Picture . Here, too, she was only the second woman to receive the directing award. She was also nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing .

She worked several times with the cameraman Joshua James Richards , with whom she also entered into a private relationship.

Her film The Eternals , which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is announced for 2021 .

Chloé Zhao lives in Ojai , California .

Boycott in China

In her home country China , Chloé Zhao is now largely boycotted. After winning the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award for Nomadland , Zhao was not featured in the state-controlled media in China. All entries relating to the film in the online service Weibo have also been deleted. Your films are not shown in Chinese cinemas and are not available on streaming platforms. The background to this is a several years old interview in which Chloé Zhao expressed himself critical of the socio-political climate in her home country.
