Rule changes

There was a rule change because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States . Since the cinemas had to remain closed due to stay-at-home orders, films that were only streamed but should have been shown in a cinema in Los Angeles County for seven days during the time of these orders could also participate . Once cinemas reopen, films must have been shown again in a Los Angeles County movie theater for seven days. In addition, the two tone categories have been merged into one, reducing the number of categories to 23.

For the first time since the sixth Academy Awards in 1934, films from more than one calendar year were allowed. The application period was extended to February 28, 2021 due to the corona crisis. It is only the fourth Academy Awards that have been postponed. In 1938 a flood caused the relocation, in 1968 there was a delay because of the assassination of Martin Luther King , and in  1981 it was postponed because of the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan .

show

The main venue was the Union Station building in Los Angeles , although parts of the show were broadcast from the traditional venue, the Dolby Theater . Due to existing international travel restrictions and a ten-day quarantine, international nominees from studios around the world were added. The event, produced by Steven Soderbergh , Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins , could only accommodate an audience of 170 people at the same time instead of the usual 3,000 spectators due to corona restrictions. The nominees and presenters were therefore exchanged. The candidates for Best Song had been pre-recorded. The appearances on the red carpet had been cut short. The event was treated as an active film set . Therefore, face masks did not have to be worn while the cameras were running, but rapid tests had to be taken.
