Anthony Wilford Brimley (born September 27, 1934 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † August 1, 2020 in St. George , Utah) was an American stuntman and actor .

Life

Brimley served three years in the United States Marine Corps in the Aleutian Islands after graduating from high school . He then found employment in various jobs, including as a bodyguard for Howard Hughes , ranch hand, blacksmith and horse dealer. He came into contact with the film industry, for which he worked as a blacksmith as well as for television productions . In the 1960s followed his first engagements as a stuntman (including for his friend Robert Duvall ) and from 1969 supporting roles in around 75 films.

Although Brimley only played supporting roles in the course of his Hollywood career, the corpulent, mustached character actor was highly recognizable. From the early 1980s he achieved greater notoriety through films such as The Thing From Another World , The Comeback of Love and The Unyielding . He often embodied sullen and gruff characters, often of rural origin, who were, however, in many cases fatherly and lovable.

Not infrequently, Brimley impersonated characters that were a good deal older than himself. In the Oscar-winning science fiction film Cocoon (1985) by Ron Howard , Brimley, just 50 years old, played one of the residents of the nursing home. In the series Our House between 1986 and 1988 he played the lead role of a strange pensioner who, after the death of his son, lets his daughter-in-law move in with her children. In the 1990s, other supporting roles in Hollywood films such as Die Firma , Harte Tore and In & Out followed . In the new millennium, Brimley was rarely seen in major film productions, but remained active until the age of over 80. In addition to his film and television roles, he was also known in the USA as an advertising medium for the Quaker Oats company .

The Mormon was married to Lynne Bagley from 1956 until her death in 2000 and the couple had four children, one of whom died as an infant. Since 2007 he was married to Beverly Berry. Brimley died on August 1, 2020, at the age of 85, in St. George, Utah, of kidney disease .
