action

Samuel Edward Macon is a tough police officer but has no friends or family. After being seriously injured in a bogus murder attempt, he comes to in a clinic; his face was surgically altered so that he could be recruited as a secret agent for CURE, an ominous government agency, under the new name Remo Williams (the name happened to come from an imprint on a bedpan lying near the hospital bed) . CURE is used for the extrajudicial murder of public enemies of the USA and only the US President knows of its existence. Remo's new boss is the Afro-American Conn MacCleary, who selected him himself and who is supported by the inconspicuous computer specialist Harold Smith. He receives his combat training from the mysterious Chiun, who instructs him in Sinanju, the mother of all Far Eastern martial arts. The old Korean looks at him and all Americans with a certain condescension, but has an affinity for some peculiarities of their culture, such as soap operas and cuddly toys .

Although Chiun is of the opinion that Sinanju can only be learned in decades, he still takes over the training of Remo and teaches him almost superhuman reaction speeds, which Remo urgently needs shortly afterwards when he comes across a plot by gun mogul George S. Grove and some military is appointed.

Major Rayner Fleming of the US Army investigates the files of the Department of Defense and discovers that the data about the new space defense system HARP is inconsistent. Grove has exceeded its original estimates by more than half and has still not produced any useful results. His new AR-60 assault rifle , which was tested in front of Fleming's eyes and killed a soldier, also raises questions.

Meanwhile, Remo's training is making progress, and Chiun says he could be there in fifteen years. The organization needs him immediately, however, to protect Major Fleming from Grove's henchmen. As a result, he quickly finds himself in the field of fire and has to be chased by some hired killers over the scaffolding of the recently restored Statue of Liberty . Here he can demonstrate his skills impressively. He then turns to Smith, who explains to him that CURE must not be exposed under any circumstances; in an emergency, all agents must kill themselves to ensure confidentiality.

Remo and his colleague MacCleary penetrate the HARP production facilities, but are attacked by the factory security . While Remo escapes, the seriously wounded MacCleary is captured. Before Grove's henchmen can interrogate him, he cuts the cables of the instruments that keep him alive. With the data obtained, however, Smith can determine that HARP is a pure invention: the satellite that was destroyed when Remo's intrusion into the factory was just a dummy that Grove used to get more money out of the government.

Remo and Chiun now make their way to a weapons test area to take out Grove for good. There they meet Major Fleming and are embroiled in a deadly hunt in which Grove does not even shrink from using artillery . Using his newfound skills, Remo can hunt down him, the killer Stone and the corrupt General Watson. Finally, he and Chiun have to flee across the water, which ultimately only works because Chiun demonstrates the full power of Sinanju: he walks across the water to Remo on the boat in front of the stunned people present and the two flee. Remo said goodbye to Major Flemming by saying that they were the "good boys".

criticism

“Agent film with witty ideas that relies more on humor than hardship; additionally stimulated by the student-master relationship, in which different attitudes towards life come together. "
