Timothy "Tim" Mayotte (born August 3, 1960 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is a retired American tennis player .

Life

Mayotte studied history at Stanford University and won the singles title at the NCAA Championships in 1981 . In the same year he became a professional tennis player and was able to win his first and only double title on the ATP World Tour at the side of his brother Chris . It was not until 1985 that he won his first of a total of twelve individual titles in Delray Beach . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1988 with position seven in singles and 1983 with position 66 in doubles.

He achieved his best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments with the semifinals in Wimbledon in 1982 and at the Australian Open in 1983 . He also reached the second round of the French Open twice as well as the second round of the US Open once .

Mayotte played five individual games for the US Davis Cup team between 1986 and 1987 . Although he was one of the most successful US individual players at the time, he was no longer considered in the quarter-finals against Germany in Hartford after his two individual defeats against Eric Jelen and Boris Becker . His Davis Cup record was negative 1-4. At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 he played for the USA and won the individual silver medal after his final defeat by Miloslav Mečíř .

In 2009 Mayotte was appointed national coach by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) .
