The Chicago ATP Tournament (officially Volvo Tennis Chicago , previously Chicago Grand Prix ) is a former American men's tennis tournament that was held in Chicago , Illinois from 1985 to 1991 . The game was played on carpet in the hall, the venue was the UIC Pavilion . Between 1985 and 1987 the tournament was held as part of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour , after which it was held for three years as an invitation tournament. In 1991 the tournament finally took place once as part of the ATP Tour ; as part of the ATP tour, it ran in the ATP World Series, the previous series of the ATP World Tour 250 .

Record winner of the tournament is John McEnroe , who with two wins was the only player to win the event more than once. In general, American players were strong in this tournament, in doubles a player from the United States always won, in singles Boris Becker is the only foreign tournament winner.
