Michibata was four times national Canadian youth champion and between 1981 and 1983 three times national Canadian tennis champion. He graduated from Pepperdine University and was voted three times in the All-American selection. In 1984 he stood at the side of Paul Annacone for the first time in a double final on the ATP World Tour , it was not until 1988 that he was able to win his first double title. In total, he won four double titles in the course of his career, all with fellow countryman Grant Connell . Another 23 times he was in a double-final, including the Masters tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1986 with position 48 in singles and in 1991 with position five in doubles.
His best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments were second round participation in all four tournaments. In the doubles competition he reached the final of the Australian Open in 1990 at the side of Grant Connell , but they were defeated by Pieter Aldrich and Danie Visser in four sets. The following year, both were in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon .
Between 1982 and 1992 he completed 13 singles and 15 doubles games for the Canadian Davis Cup team . In 1990 he was able to qualify with the team by defeating the Netherlands for the first round of the world group. In the first round encounters in 1991 against Spain and the following year against Sweden he competed with Grant Connell, both doubles they gave. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , both competed for Canada in doubles, but they were defeated in the first round by the Danes Morten Christensen and Michael Tauson .
