Witsken played for the University of Southern California from 1983 to 1985 and for the United States Junior Davis Cup team from 1983 to 1984 . In 1985 he became a professional tennis player. That same year, he stood at the side of Jorge Lozano , his partner from college days , in the quarterfinals of Indianapolis . The following year he surprisingly reached the second round of the US Open by defeating Jimmy Connors , and he was also in the semi-finals of Scottsdale . He reached his only individual final on the ATP World Tour in 1990 in San Francisco , but lost to Andre Agassi there . In the doubles competition, he was able to win twelve titles, six of them with his long-term partner Lozano. Another nine times he was in a double-final. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1989 with position 43 in singles and in 1988 with position four in doubles.
His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 1988. In the same year he stood at the side of Jorge Lozano in the semifinals of the doubles competition of the US Open ; he was also in the double quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the French Open . His second round defeat against Greg Holmes at Wimbledon in 1989 was the longest game ever played there with 5 hours and 28 minutes. It wasn't until 2010 that the record was broken in the record match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut .
Witsken died of complications from a brain tumor . He was married and had four children.
