The Canada Masters at the Aviva Center , Toronto
Second venue, the Stade IGA in Montreal

The Canada Masters (officially Rogers Masters or Rogers Cup / Coupe Rogers , previously just Canadian Open ) has been the sixth of nine tennis tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category every year since 1990 . The hard court tournament takes place in August, alternating between Montreal (odd years) and Toronto (even years). The record winner is Ivan Lendl , who won the tournament a total of six times in the 1980s; in doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi and Bob and Mike Bryan are record winners with five titles.

Like the two Spring Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , the Canada Masters and the Cincinnati Masters take place in two consecutive weeks. Patrick Rafter was able to win both tournaments in the same year since the introduction of the Masters Series in 1998, Andy Roddick in 2003 and Rafael Nadal in 2013. The brothers Bob and Mike Bryan were the only doubles team to achieve this in 2010; Jonas Björkman won the double competition in both tournaments in 1999, but with different partners. Andre Agassi also secured the title at both tournaments in 1995, but they did not take place one after the other.

The tournament is part of the US Open Series , which is considered preparation for the US Open .

At the same time as the tournament, a women's competition was held in the other city since 1991 (Toronto in odd and Montreal in even years). The men's tournament scheduled for 2020 in Toronto has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will again take place in Toronto. Then the women's competition will take place again in Montreal.

history

Under its former main name as the Canadian Open , the International Tennis Championships of Canada , the tournament looks back on a long history. The men's tournament has been held since 1881; only the events of Wimbledon and the US Open can look back on a longer tournament history.

The current tournament and name sponsor is the Canadian telecommunications company Rogers Communications .
