Leach studied at the University of Michigan and in 1982 won the NCAA championships as an unseeded player with a final win against Brad Gilbert . He was also voted two times in the All-American selection. In 1982 he became a professional tennis player and the following year he reached his first double-final on the ATP World Tour in Rome alongside Jan Gunnarsson . After two further finals in 1984, including again the final in Rome, he was able to win three double titles in 1986. In addition, he was in Livingston in his only individual final, which he lost to Brad Gilbert. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1985 with position 29 in singles and the following year with position 15 in doubles.
His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 1983. His best results in the doubles competition were participation in the round of 16 at the US Open in 1983 and 1987 and at Wimbledon in 1987.
Leach also played with his father in a special father / son competition in men's doubles since the 1970s, they reached ranked position 3 of the hosting United States Tennis Association (USTA). After retiring from professional sport, he worked as a tennis coach.
